The most common causes of kidney infections are bacteria, which typically enter the body through the urinary tract. Bacteria can come from dirty diapers or skin, and pass through the urethra to the bladder and then on to the kidneys. The infection can also be caused by a virus, such as a sexually transmitted disease like chlamydia or gonorrhea. Another possible cause is from trauma
